Areas of practice

Dr Alexander Ehrle is a foreign and international trade law partner in our Frankfurt and Brussels offices and admitted to practice in the EU/Germany and the United States.

Dr Alexander Ehrle focuses on trade compliance, EU and US export controls and sanctions, antiboycott laws, EU and German customs law, foreign investment screening (FDI & FSR), and EU and German sustainability and ESG regulation oftentimes applying across the supply chain (German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), CSDDD, CSRD, EU Deforestation Regulation, EU Forced Labour Regulation, and CBAM. Prior to joining Luther, Dr Alexander Ehrle practiced as attorney with other international law firms in Frankfurt, Berlin and Brussels and served as advisor and member of delegation at the United Nations in New York.

Dr Alexander Ehrle has broad experience in advising clients in international investigations, administrative criminal investigations or other types of enforcement action, license applications and appeals procedures before the EU and EU Member State authorities and trade compliance related dispute settlement. He has represented investors and sellers from across the world in foreign investment screening and clearance procedures under EU Member State and especially German FDI screening regimes and the EU FSR framework. Given his expertise in FDI matters, Dr Alexander Ehrle was recognized as one of GCR's ‘40 under 40’ in the field of FDI.

Dr Alexander Ehrle regularly publishes on international and EU trade law and is lecturer for international and foreign trade law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He also serves as co-chair of the American Bar Association’s International Human Rights Committee, where he contributes to the transatlantic exchange over international legal and policy issues relating in particular to human rights and sustainability law.

Dr Alexander Ehrle advises clients on matters relating to international trade and foreign trade law, including foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign security review (FSR) law, supply chain sustainability law, and customs law in Germany and Brussels.

His advisory services cover export control and sanctions law, including related internal investigations, regulatory proceedings, and civil and criminal court and arbitration proceedings. In addition, Dr Alexander Ehrle has extensive experience in advising on investment screening procedures in Germany and worldwide, as well as on the Third-Country Subsidies Regulation (FSR) and the clearance procedures based on it in the context of transactions. For his expertise in investment screening law, Dr Ehrle was recognised by the Global Competition Review (GCR) as one of the “40 under 40” in the field of FDI.

His advisory work also covers supply chain-related sustainability legislation, in particular the CSDDD, the LkSG, the CSRD and the ESRS, as well as other EU regulations under the Green Deal, such as the EU Deforestation Regulation, the EU Forced Labour Regulation and the CBAM.
