“Medical Technology Market Study” - Luther accompanies digital change in the health care industry

Background

On 9 March 2021, Luther actively participated in an event organised by “Brancheninitiative Gesundheitswirtschaft Südwestfalen e.V.” (an association and network uniting businesses and institutions from the health care industry) in cooperation with “VDMA Arbeitsgemeinschaft Medizintechnik” (a VDMA working group focusing on medical technology).

As part of the “Südwestfalen digital” series of online seminars, Cornelia Yzer and Dr Ulrich Philippi, two experienced advisors from our law firm, presented the “Medical Technology Market Study 2020”. More than 90 companies from the health care industry attended the event. The third speaker was Dirk Freiland, Managing Partner of the M&A consultancy firm Clairfield International.

“Health insurance companies can now develop digital care innovations together with medical device manufacturers using their anonymised social data. This offers a great opportunity for them to optimise care,” said Cornelia Yzer (Lawyer and Senator a.D., Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft). She pointed out in her presentation: “The German Future of Hospitals Act (Krankenhauszukunftsgesetz – KHZG) offers medium-sized medical technology manufacturers significant market potential, but it also is full of pitfalls. Navigational help is needed.”

Dr Ulrich Philippi (Partner, Luther Rechtanwaltsgesellschaft) sees the future of the health care industry in strategic growth: “Medium-sized medical technology companies increasingly need to go for co-operation and open up to investors in order to remain competitive.”

The presentations and the “Medical Technology Market Study 2020” are available for download on the website of Transferverbund Südwestfalen: https://transferverbund-sw.de/suedwestfalen-digital/

“Medical Technology Market Study 2020”

Medical technology is (today perhaps more than ever), and will continue to be, a highly innovative and attractive market for medium-sized (supply) companies. The “Medical Technology Market Study 2020” provides an up-to-date overview of trends, opportunities and challenges for manufacturers and suppliers or for companies that would like to become involved in this sector. It was published by Luther Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft and the consultancy firm Clairfield.

The study was prepared in cooperation with the Medical Technology Working Group of the VDMA, the German Medical Technology Association (BVMed) and the Institute for Medical Device Technology at the University of Stuttgart. For the first time, it looks at the entire value chain in the area of medical technology for Germany and analyses current market developments at national and international levels as well as the most important trends in the MedTech industry and on the transaction market.

The study is available for download here.
